Why ship through Takoradi
Takoradi is Ghana's second seaport and the natural gateway for the Western Region. For a mine near Tarkwa or an offshore supply base at Takoradi itself, landing cargo here avoids the long road from Tema and the congestion around Accra. Takoradi to Kumasi is about 240 to 280 km by road, depending on the route, compared with about 270 km from Tema, so it is also a practical option for some Ashanti Region cargo.
The port handles containers, dry bulk such as clinker and manganese, breakbulk steel and pipe, and heavy project cargo. The customs process is the same as at Tema: one ICUMS declaration, the same permits and the same duty rules.
Cargo we clear at Takoradi
- Oil and gas equipment. Drilling consumables, pipe, valves, subsea components and spares for offshore operations. Some of this enters under special customs regimes or exemptions, which must be in place before the goods arrive.
- Mining supplies. Mill balls, explosives accessories, reagents, tyres, spares and heavy mobile equipment for the gold and manganese mines of the Western Region and beyond.
- Bulk and breakbulk. Clinker for cement production, fertiliser, steel and other loose or unitised cargo discharged over the quay.
- General containers. Commercial stock for importers in Takoradi, Sekondi, Tarkwa and the surrounding towns.
Customs clearing at Takoradi, step by step
- Send us the bill of lading, commercial invoice and packing list before the vessel sails, along with any exemption letter or permit.
- We classify the goods, check values and descriptions, and prepare the ICUMS declaration before arrival.
- We confirm the duty and taxes so funds are ready. Estimate them first with the import duty calculator.
- We attend examination, obtain the release and the shipping line delivery order, and settle port charges.
- We arrange haulage from the port to your yard, site or warehouse, and return the empty container.
The same sequence is explained in detail in how customs clearance works at Tema.
Exports through Takoradi
Takoradi is a major export port for manganese, bauxite, cocoa and timber. Exporters need an export declaration in ICUMS, the relevant permits or certificates for the commodity, and stuffing or loading booked in step with the vessel's cut-off. We prepare the documents, coordinate the loading and make sure the declaration is in before the cut-off. Read more on our export from Ghana page.
Haulage from Takoradi to the Western and Ashanti regions
Most Takoradi cargo is going somewhere inland. We arrange trucks sized to the load: container trucks for boxes, flatbeds for pipe and steel, and low-bed trailers for heavy machinery. Abnormal loads need road permits and sometimes an escort, which we plan before the cargo lands. Typical runs include Tarkwa, Prestea, Bogoso and Obuasi, as well as Kumasi, where our Kumasi logistics service takes over. More on trucks and road rules in haulage and trucking in Ghana.
Keeping port charges down
Port storage at Takoradi runs until your cargo leaves the port, and shipping line demurrage and detention run until the empty container is returned. For project cargo, a single missing exemption letter can hold a whole shipment. We track the free days on every container and tell you before charges start. See our guide to demurrage and storage for how both clocks work.
Questions
Is customs clearance at Takoradi different from Tema?
The process is the same: one ICUMS declaration, the same duty rates and the same permits. The difference is in the cargo mix, with more bulk, breakbulk and project cargo at Takoradi, and in the distances to inland sites.
Can you clear oil and gas equipment that has a duty exemption?
Yes. Send us the exemption or special regime approval before the cargo ships, so it can be applied to the declaration on arrival. Goods that arrive without it are assessed at normal rates.
How far is Takoradi from Kumasi by road?
About 240 to 280 km, depending on the route, usually a journey of several hours for a loaded truck.
Do you handle exports of cocoa or manganese from Takoradi?
We prepare export declarations and coordinate loading for exporters. Commodity exports also have their own regulatory requirements, which we check with you for each shipment.
Can you move heavy machinery from Takoradi port to a mine site?
Yes. We arrange low-bed trailers, road permits for abnormal loads and, where needed, an escort, and plan the route to the site in advance.
