Container haulage from Tema and Takoradi
Most of Ghana's imports leave the port on a truck. We move 20ft and 40ft containers, flat racks and loose cargo from the terminals at Tema and Takoradi to warehouses, shops, factories and project sites across the country.
- Tema to Accra and the Tema industrial area. About 25 to 40 km, usually delivered the same day the container is released, traffic permitting.
- Tema to Kumasi. About 270 km, usually a same day or next day delivery.
- Tema to Tamale and the north. About 650 km to Tamale, usually 1 to 2 days on the road, further for Bolgatanga, Wa and the border towns.
- Takoradi to the Western and Ashanti regions. Tarkwa, Prestea, Obuasi and Kumasi for mining and industrial cargo. See clearing at Takoradi.
Because we also clear the cargo, the truck is booked for the day of release rather than after it, so the container does not sit in the port collecting storage. Clearance at Tema is covered on our Tema clearing agent page.
The right truck for the load
- Container trucks for standard 20ft and 40ft boxes.
- Flatbeds for steel, pipe, timber, bagged goods and palletised cargo.
- Low-bed trailers for excavators, generators, transformers and other heavy machinery.
- Side-loaders where the container must be set down at your site, so you can unload at your own pace without keeping the truck waiting.
- Smaller trucks for loose cargo, LCL deliveries and distribution from a warehouse to several customers.
Tell us the weight, dimensions and the access at the delivery point, such as gate width, road surface and whether a forklift is on site, and we will match the vehicle to the job.
Transit trucking to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger
Cargo for the Sahel moves north from Tema under a customs transit declaration, sealed and monitored to the exit border. Paga, in the Upper East Region, is the main crossing for Burkina Faso and onward to Niger. Hamile, in the Upper West Region, is an alternative route towards western Burkina Faso and Mali. We handle the transit documents, the trucking and the border handover, and work with your team in English or French.
Axle load limits and abnormal loads
Ghana enforces axle load limits at weighbridges on the main highways. An overloaded truck can be fined, held or made to offload, which costs far more than splitting the load at the start. We plan the weight per axle before loading, not at the weighbridge.
Loads that are over the standard width, height, length or weight need an abnormal load permit from the road authorities, and often a police or pilot escort and travel at set times of day. Route surveys matter for very heavy or tall cargo because of bridges, power lines and tight junctions. We arrange the permits and escort as part of the quote, so the cargo does not wait at the port while paperwork catches up.
Empty container return
The shipping line's clock keeps running after the container leaves the port, until the empty is returned to its depot. Every day a full container waits at your site to be unloaded adds detention charges. We plan delivery with you so unloading starts as soon as the truck arrives, then return the empty and confirm the return date. If you need longer to unload, a side-loader drop or a move to warehousing in Tema is often cheaper than detention. Our demurrage and storage guide explains both clocks.
Tracking and proof of delivery
You can follow each delivery on our tracking page and share the link with your team or your customer. At the delivery point our driver captures the receiver's signature and a photo of the delivered cargo, and the proof of delivery is attached to your shipment straight away. If something is short or damaged, it is recorded at the gate, not argued about a week later.
Questions
How much does it cost to truck a container from Tema to Kumasi?
It depends on the container size and weight, the type of truck, whether the box is returned empty to Tema, waiting time at your site and fuel prices at the time. Request a quote with the details and we will price the full move.
How long does haulage from Tema to Tamale take?
Usually about 1 to 2 days on the road for a loaded truck, after the container is released from the port. Weather, road works and loading times can add to that.
Can you move heavy machinery that needs a permit?
Yes. We arrange low-bed trailers, the abnormal load permit and any escort needed, and plan the route in advance.
Do you return the empty container to the shipping line?
Yes. Empty return is part of the job, and we track the shipping line free days so detention charges do not build up.
Can you deliver a container I cleared with another agent?
Yes. Once the container is released and the delivery order is issued, we can collect it from the terminal and deliver it.
How do I know my goods were delivered?
Our driver captures the receiver's signature and a photo at delivery, and the proof of delivery appears on your shipment on the tracking page.
