How should we value it?

Customs values a used vehicle from its own price database by chassis number, which can differ from what you paid. Treat this as a planning estimate. Your final assessment comes from ICUMS.

  1. Value

Customs starts from a value for the exact model and year. When it works from the price new, it allows depreciation by age, up to 50% for vehicles over 5 years old.

  2. Import duty

    Petrol: up to 1,000 cc 5%, 1,001 to 3,000 cc 10%, over 3,000 cc 20%. Diesel: up to 1,500 cc 5%, 1,501 to 2,500 cc 10%, over 2,500 cc 20%. Buses, trucks and goods vehicles: 5%.

  3. Overage penalty

Nothing up to 10 years. Over 10 and up to 12 years: 5% of CIF. Over 12 and up to 15 years: 20% of CIF. Older vehicles can no longer be imported.

  4. Levies, VAT, NHIL & GETFund

Special import levy (2%), ECOWAS, AU and EXIM levies, the processing fee and ICUMS charge, then 15% VAT plus 2.5% NHIL and 2.5% GETFund on CIF, duty and levies.

What changed in October 2026?

From 1 October 2026 the Ghana Standards Authority no longer admits used vehicles more than 15 years old from their date of manufacture. Every used vehicle must also pass a GSA-approved inspection in the country of export before shipping.

Which vehicles are refused entry?

Besides the age limit: flood, fire or salvage damaged vehicles, damaged or cut chassis, vehicles assembled from parts, vehicles built right-hand drive, and speedometers that do not show km/h. Check before you pay the seller.

Why might customs value my car higher than I paid?

GRA values used vehicles by chassis number against its own price database, not only your auction invoice. Send us the VIN before you buy and we will check the likely assessment.

Does this include registration and port charges?

No. DVLA registration, port handling, shipping line charges, storage and our clearing fee are separate. Ask for a quote and we will give you the full landed cost.
